Countdown to the European APA Conference May 2012
The Institute of Technology Tralee and the CARA APA Centre are honoured to announce that the European Congress in Adapted Physical Activity (EUCAPA) will take place in Kerry in early May 2012. Following a lengthy and detailed application process, the European Federation of Adapted Physical Activity approved the IT Tralee/CARA bid to host the conference and now its full steam ahead for this massive international gathering of many of the worlds leading practitioners, educators and researchers in the area of APA.
Being awarded the conference is a great acknowledgement of the rapid growth and development of APA in Ireland in recent years. The leading role of IT Tralee and CARA in a number of European APA/APE projects highlighted the interest level and high quality of work being done in the area of inclusion of people with disabilities in Ireland. We hope that the staging of the conference here will promote and facilitate the continuous growth of the area throughout Ireland and indeed Europe.
Hundreds of researchers from around Europe and beyond will apply to present at this prestigious event, with all papers being vetted by the conference scientific committee. Presentations will be organised into similar strands as the previous national APA conferences which we organised, namely, Physical Education, Sport, Physical Activity and Rehabilitation. Keynote speakers with expertise in each area are already invited. Key Note speakers confirmed include:
• Donna Goodwin, Associate Professor, Faculty of Physical Education and W1-67 Van Vliet Centre Recreation, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB
• Mary Davis, Managing Director of Special Olympics Europe Eurasia (SOEE)
• Vicky Tolfrey, Senior Lecturer & Director of the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport
• David Carless Senior Research Fellow (Mental Health and Physical Activity), Carnegie Research Institute
The great variety of areas and topics being addressed means that there will be something of interest for everybody who is involved in APA. We are particularly keen that people with disabilities, their families and people who work in the APA/ disability sector attend.
It is expected that over 400 delegates from all over the world will attend this 4 day conference. Previous European APA conferences in Finland (2010) and Italy (2008) were hugely successful. Both of these were attended by IT Tralee and CARA staff. Their experience, coupled with that of our organising committee and the support from the EUFAPA board should result in a ‘not to be missed’ event in Kerry. We also hope to build a range of sporting and cultural activities around the conference so as to promote Kerry and Ireland as an attractive destination.
